U.S. Navy orders Sea Giraffe AMB radar for installation on newest Littoral Combat Ships

Reported to us by: DEFENSENEWS - Thu, 04/18/2019 - 12:09 - [CET]

Swedish aerospace and defense company Saab has announced it had got a new order for delivering the Sea Giraffe AMB naval radar for the U.S. Navy.

The U.S. Navy has contracted Saab to supply the Sea Giraffe AMB multi-role surveillance radar, designated AN/SPS-77, for installation on the U.S. Navy’s newest Littoral Combat Ships LCS 36 and LCS 38.

The order, placed by General Dynamics, is further testament to Saab’s continued growth in the U.S. market.

Saab received the first order for Sea Giraffe AMB for the Littoral Combat Ships in 2005.  Since that time, Saab has continuously developed the standard Giraffe AMB sensor to meet multiple missions in the U.S. sea services from open-ocean blue-water applications into the littorals.

“Saab is a world leader in radar and sensor technology. With the Sea Giraffe, we have developed a highly capable and efficient radar platform that can be easily adapted and evolved to meet the specific operational needs of the customer; now and in the future”, says Anders Carp, Senior Vice President and Head of Saab business area Surveillance.

Saab will carry out the work in Syracuse, NY in the U.S. and Gothenburg, Sweden.

In addition to the AN/SPS-77 currently being deployed on Independence-class Littoral Combat Ships, variants of Sea Giraffe are also being developed for U.S. Navy Expeditionary Sea Base ships and U.S. Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Cutter class ships. Saab is also developing a derivative of the AN/SPS-77 known as AN/SPN-50, to meet the air traffic control needs of the U.S. Naval Air Systems Command for deployment on CVN class aircraft carriers and LHA/LHD class landing dock ships.

Saab’s Sea Giraffe radars are currently part of three separate U.S. military and homeland security programmes and on or under contract to be aboard six classes of U.S. ships. It all started in 2006 when the U.S. initially selected Sea Giraffe AMB for the first two Independence-class Littoral Combat Ships, which are now in operation.

“We delivered these first two systems for the Littoral Combat Ship on time, and have been building credibility by providing excellent service after they were commissioned”, head of Saab’s U.S. Sensor Division, Jay Abendroth explains.  “Saab invests heavily in its products with in-house research and development programs to ensure that our products are current and up to date while offering shorter delivery times compared to competitors. By offering mature products at the start of programs, Saab is able to get products to the field faster with fewer changes.”

Transfer of technology forms a key part of Saab’s offer and the company is creating a number of domestic markets outside of Sweden. This is dually beneficial for Saab and the customer. In the U.S., this means the products develop in line with the end user’s requirements, support local industry and create jobs, while Saab is able to expand its market base.

NATO battlegroup began exercise Eager Leopard in Lithuania

Reported to us by: DEFENSENEWS - Thu, 04/18/2019 - 10:14 - [CET]

NATO’s multinational battlegroup in Lithuania began exercise Eager Leopard in Pabrade on Wednesday (17 April 2019).

According to a statement released by NATO, the exercise mobilizes around 650 troops, including Czech, Dutch, German and Norwegian forces. It provides an opportunity for the battlegroup to enhance its readiness, testing its ability to deploy troops and equipment.

The battlegroup will conduct three training sequences of 36 hours, testing defensive and offensive tactics.

“This exercise is the perfect chance for the German, Dutch and Czech companies to increase their readiness and capabilities. This is especially important in order to prepare for the Level 3 Field training exercise Iron Wolf, which we will conduct with our Lithuanian partners in June”, said Lt. Col. Peer Papenbroock, Commander of the battlegroup in Lithuania.

NATO deployed four multinational battlegroups to Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland in 2017. These battlegroups, led by the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany and the United States respectively, are multinational, and combat-ready.

Their presence makes clear that an attack on one Ally will be considered an attack on the whole Alliance. NATO’s battlegroups form part of the biggest reinforcement of the Alliance‘s collective defense in a generation.

US and Israeli snipers conduct joint training

Reported to us by: DEFENSENEWS - Thu, 04/18/2019 - 10:00 - [CET]

Snipers assigned to 2nd Battalion, 34th Armored Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division conduct sniper training with snipers from the Israel Defense Forces 35th Paratroopers Brigade here April 05, 2019.

The training was part of Allied Spirit X, which includes approximately 5,600 participants from 15 nations, March 30-April 17, 2019, at the Hohenfels Training Area in southeastern Germany.

“We came out here to Grafenwoehr, to work with the Israeli snipers,” said U.S. Army Sgt. Phillip West, sniper assigned to 2nd Bn., 34th Armored Regt., 1st ABCT, 1st ID. “To compare our equipment and techniques and to do some drills with them.”

Allied Spirit is a U.S. Army Europe-directed multinational exercise series designed to develop and enhance NATO and key partner interoperability and readiness across specified warfighting functions.

“Training is going very well with the Israeli snipers,” said U.S. Army Sgt. Tacoma L. Haack, sniper assigned to the 2nd Bn., 34th Armored Regt., 1st ABCT, 1st ID, “There are some parts of their training that we don’t do. So, it’s nice to get out here and see how they shoot and what techniques they use.”

Achieving interoperability through exercises such as Allied Spirit X by engaging with the militaries of other nations gives U.S. Soldiers the opportunity to learn skills that increase the lethality of their units.

“Their basis of training is more quickness and memory, while ours is more long distance and calculated,” said Sgt. Haack.

At the range the snipers shot targets from 300, 400, 500, 600, and 800 meters in both the prone and standing positions. The U.S. snipers sent rounds downrange using the M110-SASS and the Israeli snipers used the SR25-CARBINE.

“We’re similar in a lot of ways,” said Sgt. West, “but the Israeli snipers also do things a little bit differently. So, it’s really good training to get out here and work with them. They are really good at what they do, they are very proficient.”

Allied Spirit X allows allies to connect personally, professionally, technically and tactically – to create stronger, more capable forces during times of crisis.

“We’ve been bouncing our ideas off of each other,” said Sgt. Haack. “We’ve been incorporating each other’s skills and techniques into our own training to make us all better.”

General Dynamics receives $125 million bombs contract modification

Reported to us by: DEFENSENEWS - Thu, 04/18/2019 - 09:47 - [CET]

The U.S. Department of Defense announced on Wednesday that General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems (GD-OTS) received a $138 million contract modification for manufacture parts for the military service’s MK80 and BLU-109 Tritonal bombs.

GD-OTS was awarded a $125,000,000 modification to domestic and Foreign Military Sales (Iraq, Bahrain and Singapore) contract for MK80 series general purpose and BLU-109 tritonal bomb components.

The Mk80 series are relatively cheap and can be deployed by a wide variety of aircraft.

This class of weapons uses a shape known as Aero 1A, designed by Ed Heinemann of Douglas Aircraft as the result of studies in 1946. It has a length-to-diameter ratio of about 8:1, and results in minimal drag for the carrier aircraft. The Mark 80 series was not used in combat until the Vietnam War, but has since replaced most earlier GP weapons. It includes four basic weapon types:

  • Mark 81 – nominal weight 250 pounds (113 kg)
  • Mark 82 – nominal weight 500 pounds (227 kg)
  • Mark 83 – nominal weight 1,000 pounds (454 kg)
  • Mark 84 – nominal weight 2,000 pounds (907 kg)

The BLU-109 is a hardened penetration bomb. The BLU-109 has a steel casing about 1 inch (25.4 mm) thick, filled with 530 lb (240 kg) of Tritonal. It has a delayed-action tail-fuze. The BLU-109 entered service in 1985. It is also used as the warhead of some marks of the GBU-15 electro-optically guided bomb, the GBU-27 Paveway III laser-guided bomb, and the AGM-130 rocket-boosted weapon.

General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems manufactures large- and medium-caliber ammunition, bomb bodies and precision metal components; provides explosive load, assemble and pack services for a variety of tactical missile and rocket programs; and designs and produces shaped charge warheads and control actuator systems.

Kratos Defense & Security Solutions, Inc. has announced on 17 April that Oklahoma will be the future home of the XQ-58A Valkyrie long-range, high subsonic unmanned air vehicle (UAV).

The XQ-58A Valkyrie, a runway independent UAV capable of long-range flights at high-subsonic speeds developed in partnership with the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), will be produced at the Kratos Unmanned Aircraft production facility in Oklahoma City.

“Kratos is excited to announce that Oklahoma will be the future home of the XQ-58A Valkyrie. Kratos and the state of Oklahoma share a commitment to supporting our armed forces. As our company continues to grow and develop and build high-performance, low-cost technologies like the Firejet and the Valkyrie, we are proud to be doing so here. Oklahoma’s skilled workforce will help us keep America safe,” said CEO of Kratos Eric DeMarco.

The XQ-58A Valkyrie demonstrator completed its inaugural flight March 5, 2019 at Yuma Proving Grounds, Arizona.

Kratos expects to employ more than 350 employees in Oklahoma in the high-skilled engineering, design, and manufacturing fields to support the production contracts for these aircraft.

Governor Kevin Stitt said, “Oklahoma is proud to be home to a growing list of aerospace companies, who are continuing to bring high-skilled jobs to our highly patriotic and educated workforce. Northrop Grumman marks the end of development phase of KC-135 defense system

Reported to us by: DEFENSENEWS - Thu, 04/18/2019 - 09:00 - [CET]

U.S. weapons maker Northrop Grumman Corp has announced that Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures (LAIRCM) pod for the KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft has achieved Milestone C.

The LAIRCM defense system is designed to protect the KC-135 Stratotanker and other aircraft from surface-launched Infrared (IR) guided missiles.

According to a news release put out by Northrop on Wednesday, this critical milestone, awarded by the Department of Defense Milestone Decision Authority, marks the end of the development and testing phase and enables the beginning of production and deployment.

The KC-135 does not have system built-in missile defense systems like some other aircraft because traditionally they were out of range of high-threat areas. The LAIRCM Gen 3 system will allow airplanes without built-in systems the safety and security to enter hot-spots around the globe.

The Generation 3 podded LAIRCM system, known previously as Guardian™, is an infrared countermeasure system that detects, tracks and jams incoming missiles. It incorporates advanced missile warning sensors, a compact laser pointer/tracker and a processor in a single pod that can be readily transferred between aircraft to meet rapidly changing mission requirements.

This mature system leverages Northrop Grumman’s decades-long countermeasures experience and requires no aircrew intervention. KC-135 aircrews can focus on their critical refueling, aeromedical evacuation and cargo missions while gaining the full survivability benefit the LAIRCM system provides.

To achieve Milestone C, Northrop Grumman worked closely with the KC-135 Program Office, Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve Command to thoroughly test LAIRCM for KC-135 in the laboratory and the field.

“In this changing threat environment, the LAIRCM Generation 3 pod is ready to provide much-needed protection to KC-135 aircrews as they carry out their critical support missions,” said Bob Gough, vice president, land and avionics C4ISR, Northrop Grumman.

Northrop Grumman’s infrared countermeasure systems have been installed on more than 1,800 large and small fixed wing, rotary wing and tilt-rotor platforms of more than 80 types.
