Snap stock gets two upgrades after earnings

This news was published by : MARKETWATCH exactly at Wed, 04/24/2019 - 13:11

At least two analysts abandoned their bearish stances on Snap Inc.'s stock after the company posted better-than-expected financials and user growth late on Tuesday. "We maintained an underperform rating on Snap a few months too long, as the business has now shown successive quarters of improvement," wrote Evercore ISI's Anthony DiClemente, who bumped his rating up to in-line and raised his price target to $12 from $5. "User trends have now realized stabilization, and while profitability remains a likely long way off, monetization improvements have driven a reacceleration in revenue growth." J.P. Morgan's Doug Anmuth upgraded the stock to neutral from underweight, writing positively about the company's rollout of an improved Android app. "While management is not guiding to forward [daily active users], we believe the new Android app should spark more international younger user growth, although quarter-over-quarter DAU growth is typically softer in 2Q than 1Q," he wrote. Anmuth increased his price target to $11 from $7 after the earnings report. Snap shares are up 4.6% in premarket trading Wednesday. They've gained 118% so far this year, as the S&P 500 has risen 17%.

No need for immediate action after end of Iran oil waivers: Saudi energy minister

This news was published by : ARAB ECONOMY exactly at Wed, 04/24/2019 - 10:03
Author: ReutersID: 1556092790551001900Wed, 2019-04-24 07:57

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s energy minister said on Wednesday he saw no need to raise oil output immediately after the United States ends waivers granted to buyers of Iranian crude, but added that his country will respond to customers’ needs if asked for more oil.

Speaking in Riyadh, Khalid Al-Falih said he was guided by oil market fundamentals, not prices, and global oil inventories continued to rise.

“Our intent is to remain within our voluntary (OPEC) production limit, but (we will) ... be responsive to our customers, especially those who have been under waivers and those whose waivers have been withdrawn,” Falih told reporters.

The United States has decided not to renew exemptions from sanctions against Iran granted last year to buyers of Iranian oil, taking a tougher line than expected.

“We will be responsive and we think there will be an uptick in real demand but certainly we are not going to be preemptive and increase production,” Falih said.

He added that Saudi Arabia’s oil production in May was pretty much set with very little variation from the last couple of months. June crude allocations will be decided early next month, he said.

The kingdom’s exports in April will be below 7 million barrels per day, while production is around 9.8 million bpd, Saudi officials have said.

A senior US administration official said on Monday that Trump was confident Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates would fulfill their pledges to compensate for any shortfall in the oil market following Washington’s decision to end the Iran waivers.

OPEC and industry sources told Reuters on Tuesday that Gulf OPEC producers can step in to meet any oil supply shortage but will first wait to see whether there is actual demand.

Saudi finance minister announces first budget surplus since 2014

This news was published by : ARAB ECONOMY exactly at Wed, 04/24/2019 - 09:29
Wed, 2019-04-24 10:26

DUBAI: Saudi Arabia achieves first budget surplus since 2014 at about $7.41 billion in the first quarter, the country's minister of finance said on Wednesday.

Foreign direct investment in Saudi Arabia increased by 28 percent in the first quarter, Mohammed Al-Jadaan added.

The country is also launching a $3.33 billion initiative to support the growth of private sector, including SMEs, he said.

“We are committed to the reform, this is not about the oil, this is about an economy that needs to be diversified,” Al-Jadaan said.
“If we have higher oil prices, I’ll be happier. I will have stronger reserves and that will provide a buffer for the down cycle,” he added.

Saudi Arabia plans to increase state spending by 7 percent this year in an effort to spur economic growth that has been hurt by low oil prices, according to its 2019 state budget.

Average non-oil GDP grew at a faster 2.1 percent last year, compared with 1.3 percent in 2017, Al-Jadaan said.

Meanwhile, the Saudi stock exchange Tadawol announced the listing of Al-Moammar Information Systems Company with the symbol of 7200.

Aramco bond program is only the beginning of accessing capital, and all preparatory steps for its IPO have been taken, Saudi energy minister said.

Saudi Arabia does not see a need for any immediate action as global oil inventories continue to rise, Khalid Al-Falih added.

“We will not leave our customers scrambling to find the oil they need, we will make sure the oil market remains balanced at global level,” the minister said.

The country's Council of Ministers issued a new banking license to Swiss lender Credit Suisse.

The remarks come during the first day of Saudi Financial Sector Conference, organized by the Ministry of Finance and Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority (SAMA).

British PM approves Huawei role in 5G network

This news was published by : ARAB ECONOMY exactly at Wed, 04/24/2019 - 09:16
Author: AFPID: 1556089873330922600Wed, 2019-04-24 07:09

LONDON: British Prime Minister Theresa May has given the go-ahead for China’s Huawei to help build a 5G network, shrugging off security warnings from senior ministers and Washington, the Daily Telegraph reported Wednesday.
The country’s National Security Council, which is chaired by May, agreed Tuesday to allow the Chinese technology giant limited access to build “noncore” infrastructure such as antennas, the report said.
The decision was made despite concerns raised over May’s approach by Home Secretary Sajid Javid, Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, Defense Secretary Gavin Williamson, International Trade Secretary Liam Fox and International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt.
Downing Street declined to comment on the newspaper report.
The United States has banned Huawei’s 5G technology from its territory and has urged allies in the so-called Five Eyes intelligence sharing collective — which also includes Australia, Britain, Canada and New Zealand — to follow suit.
Huawei is the leading manufacturer of equipment for next-generation 5G mobile networks with almost instantaneous data transfer that will become the nervous system of Europe’s economy, in strategic sectors like energy, transport, banking and health care.
However, the technology titan faces pushback in some Western markets over fears Beijing could spy on communications and gain access to critical infrastructure.
Last month, Britain identified “significant technological issues” in Huawei’s engineering processes that pose “new risks” for the nation’s telecommunications, according to a government report.

Apparel Sector a Reminder That Vietnam and China Must Get Along

This news was published by : Voice of America -Economy exactly at Wed, 04/24/2019 - 08:54
Vietnam this week just celebrated the fact it has survived nearly a millennium of independence from China, which previously ruled the smaller neighbor for nearly as long. Much is made of the ancient rivalry between the two sides -- but there is far less attention, especially on the international stage, on areas where they both get along fairly well. The textile and garment sector is as good an example as any of this amicable cooperation, given that China is the world’s biggest exporter in the industry, and Vietnam is the second biggest. Analysts often describe Hanoi as taking a path similar to Beijing’s, both having communist leaders who turned toward export-led market capitalism in recent decades, and in terms of selling ever more footwear, clothes and bags to the world, Vietnam is indeed following China’s actions. “China and Vietnam hold a pivotal position in the global textile market,” Chen Dapeng, president of the China National Garment Association, said at a trade conference in Ho Chi Minh City this month. “The industries of the two countries are highly complementary.” The industries compete for customers, but they are also complementary in that Chinese factories supply much of the fabric and other inputs needed in the business, while Vietnamese factory hands are increasingly supplying the labor as costs rise in China. “We believe many in Asia can cooperate,” said Le Tien Truong, CEO of the Vietnam National Textile and Garment Group. “We are not just taking Chinese investment, but also reforming Vietnamese suppliers.” He and others in Vietnam speak of domestic reform because the country does not have as large and complex a network of textile suppliers and processors as in China. That is one reason the smaller country relies on the larger one as its biggest source of imported goods overall. No matter the geopolitical problems at the top, the reality is that textile firms on both sides of the border work together to turn a profit.  On one hand, amid the trade war between the United States and China, the latter competitor has lost some of its business to Vietnam. On the other hand, it is not just foreign third parties moving factories from China to Vietnam, but also Chinese investors themselves, who deem it beneficial to relocate some of their supply chain to the south. This month a large contingent of Chinese textile companies went scouting for Vietnamese partners in the industrial parks just outside Ho Chi Minh City. This global shift in interest toward Vietnam has helped it to catch up to China, which is still the export leader in shoes and garments. “We congratulate Vietnam for that big effort,” said Sun Rui Zhe, president of the China National Textile and Apparel Council. He noted his country looks to support that effort as part of its Belt and Road Initiative, which gives loans and grants to dozens of countries, mostly for infrastructure, but also private industry, including textiles. Beijing has already financed dozens of projects in Vietnam, from coal power to ship yards to fertilizer plants. “China has done our best to improve our relations all over the world,” Sun said.

Crisis-hit Nissan issues fresh profit warning

This news was published by : ARAB ECONOMY exactly at Wed, 04/24/2019 - 08:41

TOKYO: Nissan issued a profit warning on Wednesday, deepening the woes of the Japanese car giant as it seeks to recover from the shock of former boss Carlos Ghosn’s arrest.
The firm downgraded its projection for net profit in the fiscal year to March 2019 from ¥410 billion ($3.7 billion) to ¥319 billion, the second cut in its forecast in recent months.
Nissan appeared to acknowledge the recent difficulties surrounding the Ghosn affair, which has cast questions over the company’s own corporate governance.
It cited as a reason for the downgrade “the adverse operating environment facing the company during the fourth quarter, and the impact of recent corporate issues on sales.”
The profit warning came as ex-chairman Ghosn awaits his fate after prosecutors hit him with a fourth set of charges over alleged financial misconduct.
Authorities suspect he syphoned off around $5 million for his personal use from money transferred from Nissan to a dealership in Oman.
Ghosn denies that charge and also insists he is innocent of all allegations against him.
In February, Nissan already slashed its full-year forecast, as it revealed that nine-month net profit had dropped 45 percent — a decline the firm blamed on rising raw material costs and foreign exchange difficulties.
It was forced to downgrade its net profit forecast for the fiscal year to March to ¥410 billion, compared to ¥500 billion earlier.
The results came as Nissan and its partners Renault and Mitsubishi Motors are seeking to turn the page on Ghosn’s arrest for financial misconduct, which has exposed a rift in the three-way tie-up.

US Negotiators to Visit China Next Week for New Round of Trade Talks

This news was published by : Voice of America -Economy exactly at Wed, 04/24/2019 - 08:19
The White House says two senior economic officials will travel to China next week to continue negotiations aimed at resolving the two economic giants ongoing trade war. A statement issued Tuesday says Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer will meet with Vice Premier Liu He in Beijing on April 30. The two sides will discuss such issues as intellectual property, forced technology transfer, non-tariff barriers and agriculture.  The White House says Vice Premier Liu will lead a Chinese delegation to Washington for additional talks the following week, on May 8. Washington and Beijing have been engaged in several rounds of talks since the start of the year to resolve a trade war that began last year when President Donald Trump imposed punitive tariffs on $250 billion worth of Chinese imports to compel Beijing to change its trading practices. China has retaliated with its own tariff increases on $110 billion of U.S. exports.  The Trump administration is also pushing China to end its practice of forcing U.S. companies to transfer their technology advances to Chinese firms. Trump and Chinese President Xi Jingping agreed to a 90-day truce in the trade war during a meeting in Buenos Aires last December 1. The U.S. president had initially imposed a deadline of March 2 for both sides to reach a deal before imposing a hike in tariffs from 10 to 25 percent, but delayed the increase just days before they were to take effect citing "substantial progress" in the negotiations.
